Music Lovin' #5 ( You & I - Cover by Liz Gillies )

8:52 PM

Hey people! Back with an update with Music Lovin'! Today's music recommendation is a cover of Lady Gaga's You & I by Elizabeth Gillies! I like the song You & I, but I love Liz's voice even more. She's crazy talented and pretty(hot) too! First knew about her through the TV series Victorious on Nickelodeon. Yes, I watch kids show, actually I USED to watch kids shows, now not really... I think Liz doesn't get enough attention, I mean Ariana Grande is so famous now, but I think Liz should get some attention too. Like Ariana Grande, Liz was also on 13, the broadway musical, that shows something already. Her voice is powerful and it is suited for many genres actually. She can sing jazz, rock, punk and straight up pop. There other covers she did and she actually writes her own songs too, one of which was featured on Victorious. Hopefully y'all enjoy this cover and her voice as much as I did!

Grease lightning!

8:53 PM

"Grease is the word!" So in case some of y'all don't know, Grease is a musical that started off in Chicago in 1971, which was then premiered on Broadway in 1972. Soon after made into a film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. The Australia cast is on tour and is here in Singapore! Watched it with my friend last night and despite the expensive tickets (like any other musicals) I thoroughly enjoyed myself! I have always been a fan of musicals, and one day I wish to travel to New York and watch Broadway musicals! I think this kind of started as I watched Glee years ago, music, dancing and acting all at once? PERFECT.

So my obsession for musicals kind of started from the past few years I've watched Wicked, The Lion King, Phantom of the Opera, My Fair Lady and last night Grease! Since Singapore has started this form of arts appreciation I cannot be happier coz' its definitely my cup of tea. I've not watched the movie but through Glee I kind of get a gist of the story and I've definitely heard some of the songs before, which includes, You're the one that I want and Summer Nights. I was kind of afraid I would be too sleepy for the show coz' school drains out all my energy and for My Fair Lady, I was so tired I lost focus, but to my defense I did play under the sun for 2+ hours during CCA, and heat is not my best friend. But to my surprise, Grease actually kept me energized and it was exhilarating.

The songs are different from other musicals since it was set in the 1950s, they are mostly rock hence the strong beats and fast paced songs. And another cool thing about it being rock is that instead of having an orchestra, it was a live band, like drums, electric guitar and bass band, which was super cool. I really love Gretal Scarlett (Sandy on the show)'s voice, its powerful and wonderfully suited for the role. Stephen Marty(Danny on the show) is incredibly talented as well but I didn't think his voice was really suited for the role, I think John Travolta's voice fitted the character quite nicely though. I like that the other cast members were able to sing solos as well, not just the 2 main characters and they performed wonderfully. The songs and energy are so infectious, you just can't help but to bop and mouth the lyrics to the songs! The mega mix at the end of the show was really the highlight since the cast comes together and the whole audience stands up and clap/dance/sing along to the music. It's just absolutely wonderful and I had a great time. The choreography was amazing and the costumes were beautiful and well designed.

Overall, the show was incredible and I'd love to watch it again. Unfortunately, tomorrow's their last show. So so happy I got to watch it and it really made my week!

Music Lovin' #4 (Unwell - Matchbox Twenty)

9:11 PM

Recently heard this song on the radio and kinda fell in love with it again? According to the lead singer, this song is about people who are "F--ked up and feel alone like that, We all feel a little f--ked up sometimes... you're not alone." Unwell is about having a despondent relationship with yourself. In the end, it's a positive song, because you come to terms with the fact you're not crazy. I think this song would speak for everyone at least once in your life. It's alright to feel whatever you want to feel as long as pick yourself up after that. Hope y'all like the song as much I did.

Music Lovin' #3 - Don't Stop Believin' (Journey cover) - Glee

3:29 PM

An absolute old favourite of mine. If you didn't know, I was a glee fanatic (also known as a gleek). Why was and not am? Well, I actually stopped watching glee regularly since halfway through season 3, right after their Christmas episode and it was on their mid season break. I'm not sure what made me stop, even though I love Mark Salling (also Puck on the show) and Lea Michele (Rachel) and I'm a die hard Puckleberry shipper (I ship Puck and Rachel together on the show), still am and I'm still reading fanfics to keep the fan in me alive. And even though I'm not a Finchel shipper, Cory Monteith's death was still a devastating news to me.

As a gleek, I've gotten used to seeing Cory on the show and for a show that I've loved so much (I actually bought almost every album for the first 3 seasons) you get emotionally attached to it. So for season 5, I've watched the tribute episode and of course the 100th episode, which was a 2 parter, since EVERYONE was back and I've missed them on the screen so much. It reminded me of the times where I was so in love with the show and all the characters on it. It was of course a sore spot since Finn no longer was on the screen but it was a reunion indeed. I think from season 3 onwards, the storyline was no longer as good as it was before, introducing new characters that I don't feel for made matters worse. I'm not saying the new cast is untalented. They are. They're amazing singers, dancers and actors. But I fell in the love with the characters in show since season 1, with unfamiliar faces and a story line I can no longer relate to (and honestly kinda bored me) I'm not as excited to see a new episode anymore. I still love the music though, and even though I don't watch it frequently, I would listen to songs they covered.

So back to the song, Don't Stop Believin' was the song they covered at the end of their pilot in season 1. Even though up till now they have 4 covers of it, they're all a little different, I love every single one of them. It brings tears to my eyes because it was a song filled with happiness, sadness, and a song that brought all these characters together. This is the newest cover they made for the 100th episode, and it showcases many more voices. It's just kinda bittersweet to me, and I've been listening to it almost everyday since. A pretty lengthy post for Music Lovin' but gleek or not, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.
